Liberia has two main onshore basins namely, the Lake Piso basin and the Robert-Bassa basin. The confirmed seep in the Bassa basin is a strong geological indicator that the basin potential is promising and is open for further exploration, drilling and investment. The total acreage size of the Robert-Bassa basin is 2,961.7 km2, and the Lake Piso basin has an acreage of 1,700 km2
Liberia has two offshore basins, namely: the Liberian basin and the Harper basin. There are thirty-three (33) demarcated offshore blocks; Twenty-four (24) are in the Liberia basin while nine (9) are in the Harper Basin. Seventeen (17) wells have been drilled in the Liberia basin and up to date, no wells have been drilled in the Harper Basin; seven (7) on the shelf while ten (10) are deep water wells.
Liberia has acquired both 2D and 3D seismic data. The 2D seismic Data is 34,000 km in size and 10,000km in depth. The 3D seismic data size is 24,000km² and 21,500km² in depth. Both Gravity and magnetic data are 24,408km in size. Studies have proven that the Cretaceous basin of Liberia offshore geology is analogous to the structure and petroleum play of the Guyanese Basin.
Seismic: 34,00km

Seismic: 24,00km2
21,500 km2 in Depth

NOCAL intends to add more data to its existing data to enhance petroleum activities. Some of the data additions will include Multibeam & Seep Sampling Survey, Mapping and Gravity Gradiometer 2D Nearshore and Deep-to-Ultra-deep 3D Seismic data acquisition. The additional data will benefit Liberia in the following ways:
Check which blocks are available and submit a letter of interest
NOCAL conducts preliminary due diligence
Discuss key terms with NOCAL and sign the letter of engagement
LPRA conducts prequalification, negotiations begin while data is reviewed
PSC is signed and ratified by the legislature
NOCAL is a state-owned institution that manages Liberia’s petroleum resources, including exploration and development to ensure responsible national growth.
No. Liberia is not currently producing oil. Exploration is ongoing, and production will begin only if commercially viable reserves are found.
The National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) manages Liberia’s petroleum resources.
Its work includes:
NOCAL adheres to petroleum laws, open contracting processes, and collaborates with the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) to ensure accountability.
