The National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) has welcomed the start of the Sunfish 3D seismic reprocessing project by TGS, marking another key step in boosting Liberia’s offshore exploration capabilities. The project, covering about 6,100 square kilometers in the Harper Basin, aims to improve subsurface understanding through advanced seismic imaging techniques.
The reprocessing effort will utilize advanced 3D Kirchhoff Pre-Stack Depth Migration workflows to produce clearer images of Upper Cretaceous prospects while maintaining critical AVO responses. This will allow investors and exploration companies to perform more confident reservoir assessments and discover new opportunities within Liberia’s offshore basin.
Scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2026, the project is part of a larger collaboration between NOCAL and TGS to upgrade Liberia’s seismic data library. Once finished, all available offshore 2D and 3D seismic data covering over 50,000 kilometers of 2D and more than 31,000 square kilometers of 3D will have been reprocessed with cutting-edge technology.
NOCAL considers this initiative a major milestone in establishing Liberia as an attractive, data-ready destination for offshore exploration and investment. It reinforces the country’s commitment to a transparent, modern, and competitive petroleum sector.
